The 2012 Golden Globes took place tonight and I'll just say it - some of the stars did not bring their "A" games. There were some pretty terrible looks on the red carpet and these three were the worst of the worst in my opinion - Lea Michele, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Michelle Williams. Maybe there was a "Michelle" curse that landed all of them with these horrible dresses?

My best friend Jennie came to visit this weekend and we continued on with our tradition of watching old episodes of 90210. Meanwhile, my one truly shameful addiction is watching the new 90210. It's kind of like a bad car accident - it's awful, but you can't look away. Shenae Grimes (the new Brenda) attended the 32nd Annual College Television Awards this week (when did we get SO many awards shows?) and I'm not sure what she was thinking when she put on this dress. The sleeves look like they came from a shawl that my grandmother would wear and Shenae does not have enough, errr, shape to fill out this dress. Yikes!

Stop Staring!

I really enjoy vintage-inspired dresses when they are done right and I have to say that Stop Staring! really has this genre pegged. I discovered Stop Staring! four or five years ago, but the line has been around for 10 years with designer Alicia Estrada at the helm. The line has grown considerably, especially with the retro look being so popular, and is now sold in tons of boutiques as well as online. Although they sell separates, dresses are really their forte - cocktail dresses, rockabilly dresses, plus size dresses and of course, little black dresses. Take a look:

I've mentioned before that I'm a fan of Blu Dot, but their newest promotion has made me an even bigger fan. Their modern furniture is just my style but not always in my price range. Valentine's Couture

On February 12, my friend Susan of Altered Nation Designs hosted her third couture community challenge fashion show along with Jennifer of Flockflockflock. The show featured many local Las Vegas designers, including Susan, Jennifer and my friends Charlie and Jenna, who were all challenged to create unique outfits using real Valentine’s cards, Valentine’s candies and other Valentine’s decorations. The event included a raffle and benefitted the Children's Heart Foundation of Nevada. I was lucky enough to be a part of this event, helping with the PR and gathering raffle prizes. It was a huge success and a ton of fun! Take a look at some of the amazing outfits that were created:

So, my best friend Jennie is visiting from San Diego and we are watching old episodes of Beverly Hills 90210 (and swooning over Dylan McKay, of course) as we always do. The best part of watching the old episodes is laughing at the hideous fashion and hairstyles of the early 90's. Then tonight, as I was sifting through recent celeb photos, I noticed a photo of Jersey Shore's Pauly D visiting Disney World. Normally I wouldn't waste any time looking at a photo of Pauly D, but he happens to have the exact same haircut as Brian Austin Green, a.k.a. David Silver, circa 1992. It is beyond me why anyone would want to bring back this haircut. Let's just hope people don't start sporting the high-waited jeans and ginormous scrunchies again.

A few years ago, I started to get really sick of mall shopping. Sometimes it feels like you are just looking at the same designs season after season and then you end up purchasing the same item that a million other people are wearing. Now don't get me wrong, I think places like H&M and Express are great places to shop for affordable basics (most of my work pants are the Editor pant from Express). However, I love the idea of wearing something fresh and unique. I also love being able to support up-and-coming designers. That's why websites like Etsy make my heart smile. In addition to Etsy, here are a few other websites that are great for shopping and showcase a wide range of designers, some bigger and some smaller, but all wonderful:

Ruche - This site has tons of great clothing and accessories including sections dedicated to handmade, eco-friendly and plus size items.

Need Supply - This site stocks some of my favorite designers including BB Dakota, Gentle Fawn and David David.

Mod Cloth - This is definitely one of the biggest and well-known indie fashion websites out there. They have a huge selection of clothing, accessories, housewares and vintage items.

When I first started buying her clothing, it was only available online and in select boutiques. New Zealand and Fiji Bound!

Almost a year ago, my younger brother moved to Auckland, New Zealand. So, I am currently planning a trip with my best friend Jennie to go visit him. We will also be spending five days in Fiji. I am so excited I can hardly stand it! I haven't been out of the country since the beginning of 2008 (trip to Costa Rica) and I am just itching to get out of here!! I have been very busy at work for the past few weeks planning for Ante up for Africa, a charity poker tournament which took place last weekend at the Rio (in Vegas, of course). The tournament is hosted by Don Cheadle and poker pro Annie Duke. We had a great group of celebrities in attendance and tons of professional poker players. A poker tournament isn't usually the place to look for innovative fashion, but actress and model Shanna Moakler looked pretty fashionable roaming around the tournament area. She even managed to match her dress with her UB.net poker patch. Who knew poker patches came in pink? With the exception of her brightly colored dress, most of the players were in jeans and black shirts (see Brad Garrett and Matt Damon below).

When I was first starting out in PR, I worked the grand opening of the now-defunct 40/40 Club at The Palazzo here in Vegas. It was a fancy event and I wanted to look my best, so I wore a black cocktail dress and three-inch heels. Boy, was THAT a mistake. After standing outside the club for about six hours greeting guests and showing them into the club, my feet hurt so badly that I thought I might have to cut them off completely. This is when I realized that although I'm short, I needed to invest in a cute pair (or three) of flats. Here are a few pairs that I am quite fond of:

The Mercer Flat from Marais USA. I love the side cutouts; it adds just a little bit of flair to this classic patent ballerina flat.

The Ballet Flat from The Generation. These eco-friendly, vegan ballet flats are so comfortable that you will feel like you are wearing slippers. My adventures at the San Diego Zoo

Last weekend I went to the San Diego Zoo with my best friend Jennie for the first time since I was a little girl. It was so much fun! I saw some of my favorite animals - polar bears, koala bears, pandas, ducks and llamas - and a bunch of other wonderful creatures, some of which I had never heard of. For example, they had fishing cat that looked like a larger, evil version of my cat Kuzco. Unfortunately, the cat was sleeping when we were there so I didn't get to see it swim. But here it is snoozing away:

There was also a random peacock wandering around with no zoo personnel in sight. I'm not sure that's the safest thing, but it sure was cool!

My Adventures in Soap Making - Part 1

Last weekend my friends Dani (seen above) and Charlie came over to help me make soap for the first time. Dani has made soap a few times before and I've been wanting to learn for a while, so she came over to be my soap mentor. I ordered a bunch of supplies from Bramble Berry to get us started and Dani brought some goodies over too. Since lye makes me a little nervous, we ordered some rebatch soap bases and started there. We melted some of the rebatch on the stove and some in the microwave. We then added a little coconut oil here, a little shea butter and almond oil there, and of course some color and fragrance(my favorite part). I ordered a spring sampler kit of fragrances from Bramble Berry, most which did not smell too great. Although, to my surprise, the fragrance labeled "Lettuce" smelled quite delicious.

We ended up with three different batches of soap: one orange batch with a grapefruit lily scent, one pink and purple batch with a layered blackberry and strawberry scent and one pink batch with a scent so awesome, it can only be described as scandalous!

So, I am officially a soap maker! I know you've been holding out this entire post, so go ahead and insert your "Fight Club" joke here.

Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis and Sarah Jessica Parker were in Las Vegas this week for ShoWest. I have to admit that with Sarah Jessica Parker I feel her outfits are hit or miss, nothing in between. She either looks completely gorgeous or like she is trying to be too fashion forward and missing the mark. This Marchesa dress that she wore for the ShoWest awards ceremony hits the mark completely. It's absolutely breathtaking.

The other night I was rummaging through vintage items at Gypsy Den when I noticed that their tags are actually fake leaves with prices written on them. I'm not sure if this is something new for them, but it definitely caught my eye and got me thinking about how much I like leaves. So, with that in mind, here are this week's addictions:

Not only is this leafy lantern ever so lovely, but the shop that sells it is called Gee Willowkers Lamps. Ummm, best shop name EVER.

In case you haven't noticed yet, I'm a child at heart. I think this "Home at Last" print by Cathy Nichols is just perfect for a child's room, creative space or anywhere that feels like home.

This sterling silver mother and child leaf necklace by Elizabeth Scott Designs is just beautiful. I like the idea of splitting it into two necklaces and giving the other leaf to someone you love.

I am a huge Tim Burton fan, so naturally I am very excited to see his remake of "Alice in Wonderland" which hits theaters this week. His leading lady, Helena Bonham Carter, always seems to be very creative with her fashion choices and I've found that her ensembles are either really beautiful or really terrible. She wore the above outfit to the "Alice in Wonderland" premiere in London this week - a total disaster in my opinion. It looks like a reconstructed '80s prom/bridesmaid dress. Let's hope the movie is better than this outfit.

Wearable Art: Tetsuya Uenobe

A couple of weeks ago, I received an email from Japanese designer Tetsuya Uenobe. He creates very unique, avant-garde shoes mostly inspired by various plants and animals. His handmade shoes have been displayed in museums, but he also sells them for people to wear. Above are some examples of his work - the stretching cat shoe, the swan shoe and the bird-hatching shoe. Happy Monday everyone! I had a wonderful weekend visiting my best friend Jennie in San Diego where I ate way too much and spent too much money. So overall, it was a great time! I only have one addiction for you today and it is this adorable seal that Jennie and I spotted at Coronado Island. He stayed for a few photos and then ducked back under the water. No need for a trip to Sea World.

Jerseymaids Night Light

I was having dinner with my friend Charlie the other night and she told me that I should add some more personal tidbits to my blog. So, besides indie fashion, here is a short list of a few other things that I am addicted to:
1. Flossing/Dental hygiene. Yes, I'm serious.
2. Cheese. No explanation needed.
3. Alvin and the Chipmunks. I also LOVE the Chippettes.
4. Hot air balloons. This partly stems from my love of Alvin of the Chipmunks and the wonderfulness that is The Chipmunk Adventure. If you haven't seen this movie, rent it NOW.
5. Harry Potter. These books are amazing.
6. Cow milking. It is a dream of mine to one day milk a cow. I decided this my freshman year of college and it has yet to happen. But it will happen someday. And there will be photos.
7. Rubber duckies. Yes, I realize I'm 27.

Now that you know about some of my other addictions, I must share with you something wonderful that I found on Etsy - Jerseymaids is selling a night light with hot air balloons on it! I think I'm in love.

One of my most recent addictions is Peeko Apparel. I have literally fallen in love with this Etsy shop in the last couple weeks. I first spotted the above reconstructed Dad's dress shirt and thought how creative it was that someone, designer Brook Fung to be exact, had taken this old plaid shirt and given it a new fun and flirty look. Then I realized that there is an entire shop where you can not only order your own custom reconstructed men's shirt but you can purchase some of the most innovative clothing and accessories I've seen.

Let's get back to basics. Having a small collection of simple, flattering tops and bottoms is essential when building a great wardrobe. These items are perfect for layering or casual wear. Without having to spend a lot money, here are a few of my go-to shops for basics:

1. Lamixx. I love their feminine and sexy basics. Period.

2. Foreign Exchange.There are several of these stores throughout Southern California and their website has been promising me for at least a year that I will be able to buy online "soon." I hope that its sooner rather than later because they have great basics at very affordable prices for men and women. They're a little bit like H&M, except better.

3. We Love Colors.If you are looking to buy tights, leggings, shoelaces, gloves or socks, this is the place to look. They have such a great variety for men, women and children that you are bound to find what you are searching for. The leggings alone come in 51 colors! So if you are the type of person who wants basics in black and grey or hot pink and neon orange, they've got you covered.

Last week, I was in a bit of a funk. We all have bad days (or weeks) and sometimes it helps to have something inspirational around to remind us that life isn't so bad. I know it's a bit cheesy, but here are a few items that make me smile:

1. Choose happiness shirt. Even though it doesn't always seem like it, happiness is a choice. So, put on this eco-friendly shirt and smile. True story: I actually got dumped while wearing one of these shirts. I was crying, and then I looked in the mirror and realized I was wearing a "Choose Happiness" shirt. There was nothing really left to do but laugh.

2. Ransom quotes by A.I. Paper Design. I discovered A.I. Paper Design several years ago when my mom got one of their items as a gift. I immediately Googled them and found that they sell these great pieces of art called ransom quotes. Each quote is created with different elements, much like a ransom note, and housed in a handmade stained wood box ready to hang on your wall for daily inspiration. This one says, "The best thing to hold onto in life is each other."

3. Live, Love, Laugh necklace from Kristen's Custom Creations.Three simple things that are very important to remember.

Last weekend, I worked the red carpet for the 2010 AVN Awards held at the Palms here in Vegas. The porn stars were all very nice, but for the most part, the fashion was horrible. It's probably because they don't spend that much time wearing clothes. Most of the women's outfits looked like prom dresses from a picked-over sale section and the other women were wearing outfits that did not leave nearly enough to the imagination. Sasha Grey was the one star that looked refreshingly beautiful. Here she is in her dominatrix-esque evening gown with an updo and great eye make-up.

Project Runway!

So, I was a little behind on getting into Project Runway, mostly because I hate reality shows. But after recommendations from several friends to watch it, I decided to check it out. I really enjoyed last season because it gave me a chance to watch people create something I love (fashion) by doing things I simply cannot do (draw and sew). Although I heard that last season wasn't the best, it's the only one I've seen so I'm excited about the new season. It begins airing tomorrow on Lifetime at 10 p.m. Are you going to watch?

Celeb Style Sunday: Joel McHale

I love a man in a suit. Especially these shots that Joel McHale did for GQ in October. Seriously, he's gorgeous.

One of the reasons that I have Joel McHale on the brain is that we have three new interns at my work this week and I was sharing with them my love for Joel McHale and my story of when I randomly ended up on TV with him. That's right, I was on TV with Joel McHale! He came to Vegas to do stand-up and my bosses (who are awesome!) found out that he was going to be a guest on our local FOX affiliate. Naturally, I went down there to give him two dozen cupcakes and say hello. What I didn't expect, was that he was going to bring me out during his interview and refer to me as "cupcake girl." Here is the clip of me on TV with Joel McHale. Watch as I scoot closer to him during the interview because I'm silly and had no idea what to do. What a fun morning!

Resolutions 2010

So, my only resolution this year was not to make any resolutions. I always seem to make the same ones and then give up shortly into the year. So, in 2010 I am just going to do my own thing and see how that goes. However, if you are one of those resolution-making people, I have a great resolution idea for you: buy more handmade goodies! To get you started, here are some of my favorite shops to find handmade treasures:

Start by getting clean with some of the most wonderful handmade, vegan soap from Soap Rehab. My favorite flavor? Brown Sugar Pecan. Yum!

Just in case the soap didn't make you smell yummy enough, put on some body lotion from Elli Beauty. My favorite flavor? Pink sugar. You will actually smell like cotton candy/an awesome carnival.Oh, and they have tons of "Twilight"-inspired items too.

Now, get dressed! Emily Ryan, a Portland-based designer, has a collection of beautiful and unique dresses, jumpers and tunics that are all made to order. I dare you to not fall in love with her stuff.

It's cold out! So, grab yourself some knitwear - a scarf, a hat or maybe just a neck warmer. Indie As Knits has wonderful original hand-knit items made right here in Las Vegas. Yes, we have a few crafty people here! She also makes her own tea, available here.

Lastly, why not send an original card to a loved one? Sycamore Street Press has cards with the witty little things you think, but won't find on a card at Hallmark. I particularly like the above card because I happen to have one of those people in my life who seems like the only reason they send you a gift is to get the "thank you" note. I guess I'm not the only one.

The thing I love most about fall and winter is that I get to wear boots! Here are some boots that I am crushing on right now:

1. These bourbon ankle boots from Modcloth. I am loving ankle boots right now! With the dark red color and decorative metallic button, these boots are just the right thing to spice up an outfit.

2. Honey Bee rain boots by Chooka. Living in the desert, there isn't really enough rain for me to justify owning rain boots, but I've always wanted a pair. These yellow ones make me want to go outside and play in the rain!

3. I really can't afford these boots from Oak, but I can love them from afar. And I do.

With that being said, when a friend told me about Regretsy I had to check it out. The site features funny, poorly made, weird and err, questionable items being sold on Etsy. I mean, who doesn't need a leopard coat for their goat?

It is getting a bit colder here (was actually below 70 today, briefly), and I have finally started to get in the mood for fall, which means coats. Here are a few that I am loving right now:

1. The Hepburn coat from Gentle Fawn. This is one of my favorite clothing lines and when I saw this coat, I knew I could not live without it.

2. The Normanville coat from Little Houses. I love everything in this shop, but this little red coat looks especially cozy - made completely of wool with a big hood to keep you protected from whatever's outside, even big bad wolves.

3. The When Life Gives You Lemons coat from BB Dakota. I truly love the color yellow and cannot resist it even when there's no sun.
